Democratic Senators To Be Held In Contempt If They Don’t Show
Gives Senate The Right To Take Them Into Custody
Updated: 11:48 am CST March 3, 2011

Eric Bazan MADISON, Wis. — Republican leaders in the Wisconsin Senate are adding additional pressure to 14 Democratic senators who have left the state to prevent action on a budget repair bill.

Senators passed a resolution Thursday morning finding all the Democratic lawmakers in contempt of the Senate if they don’t come back by 4 p.m. Thursday.

Sen. Scott Fitzgerald said by finding them in contempt, it gives the Senate the right to take them into custody.

Fitzgerald said he always wanted to stop short of arresting legislators, but that their actions have pushed him to the edge.

Democratic state Senators said they have no plans to return for a session day on Thursday.

Sen. Chris Larson of Milwaukee said the 14 senators remain unified in their plans to stay away until Gov. Scott Walker is willing to compromise on his plan that would take away nearly all collective bargaining rights from many public workers.

Gov. Walker is right in what he is doing. I think the union has brainwashed the teachers and other public workers.
